What are ITR forms?

ITR forms refer to Income Tax Return forms. An ITR form is a kind of form through which we need to communicate the details of our income earned, the deduction claimed and taxes paid in a financial year to the Income Tax Department. The type of ITR forms depends upon income, the category under which the taxpayers fall. ( individual, firm or a company, etc)

Which ITR form related to whom?

ITR-1 - For people being a Resident (other than NRI) having Total Income up to Rs.50,00,000. Income can include Salaries, One House Property, and Agricultural Income up to Rs.5,000 (Not applicable just in case of Individual who is either a Director in a company or has endowed in Unlisted Equity Shares).

ITR-2 - For Individuals and Hindu Undivided Family’s not having income from profits and gains of business or profession.

ITR-3 - For individuals and Hindu Undivided Family’s having income from profits and gains of business or a profession.

ITR-4 - For Individuals, Hindu Undivided Family's and companies (other than Limited Liability Partnership) being a Resident having a Total Income up to Rs.50 lakhs and having income from Business and Profession that is computed under sections 44AD, 44ADA, or 44AE (Not for the person who is Director of a corporation or has investments in Unlisted Equity Shares).

ITR-5 - ITR-5 is filed by people other than:-

(i) Individuals

(ii) Hindu Undivided Families

(iii) Companies and

(iv) People who are filing Form ITR-7

ITR-6 - ITR-6 files by Companies other than companies claiming exemption beneath section 11.

ITR-7 - ITR-7 files by companies required to endow return under section 139(4A) or 139(4B) or 139(4C) or 139(4D).

How to file income tax return online:-

  • Log in to the Income-tax portal by entering the user id and the password.

  • Click on the "e-file" menu and select Income Tax Return and then click on continue.

  • Read the instruction carefully and fill in the applicable and obligatory fields in the form. Choose the suitable verification option.

  • Now, pay tax. Now choose any one of the options( I would like to e-verify, I would like to e-verify later within 120 days from the date of filing, I don't want to e-verify and would like to send signed ITR V through normal or speed post).

  • Click on the "Preview and Submit" option then click on "submit" the ITR.

  • Now by choosing the ' I would like to e-verify ' option, e-verification can be done by any of the following methods by entering the EVC/OTP.
